Garden gnomes wear red hats. Very rarely is a
gnome, at least a male gnome, spotted with a different color
upon his head. One may ask, “Why are these little creatures
always wearing hats, and why must the hats be red?” Perhaps
you should ask the ladies of the Red Hat Society – do
these women have anything in common with the little men who
reside in gardens? After all, they have a similar propensity
toward wearing red hats!
In truth, however, garden gnomes and women over fifty wear
red hats for entirely different reasons. Gnomes wear hats of
red due to fisherman’s tradition – Mediterranean
fisherman would wear white hats at night if they wanted to be
seen in the dark, and red hats if they did not. Gnomes are creatures
who prefer to stay hidden, so they opt for the latter color.
Women of the Red Hat Society, on the other hand, choose their
hat color based on a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins, “When
I am an old woman, I shall wear purple, with a red hat that
doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me…”
So, as you can see, old women and garden gnomes each wear red
hats for entirely different reasons… unless they are all
part of an underground secret society.
