Garden art, in many cases, is much more than just
art – it is a tool. There are many regular garden items
that can be considered art – if you buy the right pieces.
They are not simply for looking at – save your “looking”
for the flowers and the trees.
Here are some examples of useful garden art – pieces
that can add an interesting flair to your garden:
• Plant stakes – these do not have to basic sticks
of wood. They can be made of rusted metal and cut into interesting
shapes. They can be made with a chalkboard front that can be
written on. They can be made large or small, and they can add
a secondary interest to a flower or vegetable garden.
• Birdhouses – these are most definitely not just
for the birds. A row of birdhouses on a wall or a colony in
a tree can be most interesting. A hand-painted wooden one could
be set on a porch balcony, or an abstract ceramic one can be
placed near a kitchen window.
• Humming bird feeders – yes, you can buy a basic
red plastic one, but why not get one that doubles as garden
art? Why not get one of hand blown glass?
• Stepping stones – put a little bit of outdoor
décor at your feet. Mix in a few artsy stepping stones
with a rocky path. Choose from ones with sayings, to mosaic
ones, to plaster ones with your child’s handprint.
As you can see, even relatively basic garden items can easily
double as garden art. Consider a decorative wrought iron hose
reel rather than a plastic one. Choose a frog sprinkler head
rather than a basic one. Be creative and have fun!
